Located in the heart of the Overberg, at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, where vineyards prosper, you can find our boutique wine cellar. Here we strive for excellence, while taking nature into consideration. This is the only wine farm in Swellendam.
It was after a meeting of minds between the creator, Carl van Wijck and his Belgian friend, that the first wine-making steps were planned – securing land and capital. The marriage between a dream and commercial reality required counter-intuitive thinking and extraordinary courage and faith from the Belgian partners. All wines can claim their own uniqueness. Olivedale Wines are not only natural wines. They are wines of nature!
"The art of winemaking starts with knowing you are just a humble part of a natural wonder."
Wine tasting experience:
This is not your typical modern wine tasting done at a restaurant venue by trained staff. This wine experience will be offered at the Olivedale Cellar by one of the winemakers himself - Carl van Wijck.
Who would enjoy this? Anyone with a keen interest in the whole wine making process, not just the drinking of it. You will hear from Carl himself how he and his team started this wine making adventure with only the virgin soil where this award winning vineyard now exists. Listen as winemaker Carl van Wijck tells of the joys and trials of this journey, while tasting their special boutique wines.
Who would not enjoy this? Someone looking for a quick wine tasting in a restaurant setting.
Blogger note: When we arrived Carl asked us how much time we had. We said about an hour and he was visibly disappointed. We left 3.5 hours later, not even having tasted the red wines. This is not a tasting but rather an experience. From the outside the cellar looks like a big refrigerator, but when you pass through the door you are greeted with classical music (playing 24 hours a day - apparently for the wine's sake), Persian carpet, antique furniture and memories, wooden kegs and wine making instruments made of stainless steel. When the doors close behind you, you are seated at a wooden table. For a moment you will forget about the world outside this big "container" and join Carl on a wine adventure. Seen "A Good Year" with Russell Crowe? Olivedale's Carl van Wijck would be Francis Duflot - the guy talking to the vineyard. This is not his job, rather his calling.

How do I get there (or select the Google Map Link ):
- Drive 6.5km from Swellendam towards George and turn right at the Olivedale turnoff (this whole area is called Olivedale) - if you pass Rolandale Farm stall you have missed the turnoff.
- After another 1.5km you will reach a primary school on your left - turn right on tar road. The Lavender Farm use the same turnoff. Stay on the tar road, if you turn right too early you will leave the tar road and enter the Mullersrus housing settlement.
- Drive 5.3km and turn left at the Olivedale Private Vineyard sign, 20m after the "Rivierplaas" turnoff. If you reach "Queen of Africa" you have missed the turnoff. When the tar road turns to gravel you are close to the turnoff.
- After about 50m you will see a big white square container-like building on your right - park there.
