David and Felicity from Bukkenburg Pottery Studio are well-known for their skill in high temperature, reduction-fired stoneware and porcelain. A well-kept secret is their skill with children.
Today's experience will forever change the way my children and I look at pottery.
At 9:00 this morning my wife, myself and a good friend arrived at Bukkenburg Pottery Studio with our children aged 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old. The studio and heritage house are situated in a delightful country garden in the historic heart of Swellendam. This is in the Old Quarter.
After a warm welcome at the gate, David spent the next hour and a bit to take the children from being novices to finishing their first pottery masterpiece. David's 40 years of experience at his craft made a difficult task seem simple in the children's hands. The joy on the children's faces when seeing the clay transform from a ball to something beautiful, was priceless.
If you want to do as we did today, contact David to arange. Pottery workshops and courses can also be arranged. The studio and showroom are open daily and visitors are welcome to browse and enjoy the environment. It is advisable to phone ahead if travelling from afar. A comprehensive shipping service is available to any destination.
Accommodation is available at the studio in a two-bedroom cottage.
Afterwards we went for coffee, cake and milkshakes at La Belle Alliance which is about 3 minutes walk up the street. La Belle Alliance is right next to the Koringlands river and under trees. They have seating and colouring books for children. They are bicycle friendly as well.
