This is an awesome event! The Marloth Mountain Challenge (MMC) is part of the Wildrunner Mountain Challenge Series, with the other two events being in Jonkershoek and Helderberg. This trail run event is one not to be missed. Even though the race starts in The Old Quarter between some of the best restaurants, coffee shops and accommodation in Swellendam, you are only 1.5km from being lost in nature.
The MMC Solo Ultra Skymarathon® is also part of the SA Skyrunner® Series and is the only ultra in South Africa that form part of the Skyrunner® Series. The Swellendam Hiking Trail is one of South Africa’s most sought-after hiking trails; a true six-day mountain wilderness experience through the magnificent Swellendam Mountains.
The race is 55km long and may be run as either a solo runner or in a team of three, with the route broken into three distinct stages. Alternatively, you can enter the 10km Marloth Mountain Run for a shorter, but equally inspiring, time in the mountain. 87% of this epic race distance is on remote mountain hiking trail and, with 3 494m of vertical height gain over the entire distance, is not for the inexperienced solo mountain runner. Fortunately, the relay structure (24km + 16km + 15km) puts this within reach of those with a little less experience in search of some genuine mountain wilderness running, packed into an exciting relay format.
I am not (yet) an experienced Trail Runner and took part in the 10km fun run. It was awesome. The 10km route can be hiked or ran right through the year. My trail run effort included walking, jumping and climbing. It was great. Even though the 10km fun run only takes you half way up the mountain, I felt like I was on top of the world.
After finishing we had the option of enjoying Barista Coffee or Craft Beer at The Whipping Post. This was an amazing experience and I am hoping to run one of the relay legs next year.
You can also see a previous post when my wife and I hiked this same route.
