The Good life in

Fishing

I would not call myself a fisherman. I do not own any fishing gear. But I have many fond memories of fishing as a young boy on our farm.

While growing up on our farm I spent a lot of afternoons at the river with my brothers. After school we would meet up with our friends whose parents worked on our farm. We would then go digging for earthworms, grab our rods and be off to the river. The fishing rods would be self-made using a stick, string and hook. Those were good times and great memories.

So naturally I want my boys to have the same experiences and memories. We started by digging up their mom’s garden for earth worms and put them in an old container. Next we assembled three fishing rods and packed a backpack with necessities. Peanut butter and jam sandwiches, water and marshmallows. Luckily the fishing waters were only about 400m from home :)yogurt

We had a great time. And we caught some fish. The four bluegills we caught were not very big, but my boys could not contain themselves with excitement and pride. They rushed back home to start making a fire and within the hour lunch was served. This type of experience is priceless. If you do not have any fishing gear – do not fear, the local Co-op has a section dedicated to fishing. Swellendam has great fishing spots. So start building those memories.
