Berry picking is one of the great experiences you can enjoy in Swellendam. The beautiful Hermitage valley is located at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains. This is also where most of the berry and wildebraam farms are located. Berry picking season starts in November and ends in mid-January. Visitors can help with berry picking from November to December.
Today our search for berries included a boat ride and finding a great coffee shop. The Berry Farm is about 5 minutes’ drive from the centre of town. Apart from a berry liqueur tasting room, they have a coffee shop/restaurant with a view to die for. The coffee shop is situated almost on-top of a dam with a wooden deck from where you have an amazing view of the mountains.
The berries that came with the ice-cream could not have been fresher and I had to move quickly to sample some before it disappeared from my boys' plates. I was surprised at the good quality of the filter coffee. The staff were very friendly. The staff work at the liqueur tasting room and at the coffee shop, so if you don't find them at the one, go and fetch them at the other. The coffee shop and tasting room are right next to each other. A surprising free extra at this coffee shop is the use of the canoes. The boys and I had a great time rowing on the picturesque dam. They have life-jackets at the coffee shop for this purpose.
