When you are in Swellendam, one of the "must-do" activities is to visit a Berry farm in the beautiful Hermitage Valley, just outside Swellendam. You can choose between Wildebraam Berry Estate and The Berry Farm. Both are excellent choices and although they have berries in common, these are two very different farms. Each is worth a visit.
Today we went to pick berries and try out the new coffee shop at Wildebraam Berry Estate. During November and December you can pick your own berries. You can eat as much as you can and pay for the weight of berries that you picked. If you are going to pick berries I would advise that you and your children wear shoes. Out of season you can buy frozen berries.
The views you have of the mountain are beautiful. Wildebraam recently opened a coffee shop area with coffee (obviously), muffins, sandwiches, berry smoothies, baked cheesecake, ice-cream and cheese platters. My wife and I had a cappuccino and homemade baked chocolate marble cheesecake. The cheesecake was amazing. Our boys had berry smoothie which they would not share.
On Saturday 5 December the Wildebraam Berry Festival is taking place from 9:00 - 16:00. This is an annual event you should put on your calendar, with exciting activities for the whole family. Entrance costs R15 for adults and R10 for children. Activities include a berry race, market, live music, kids' area, berry picking, potjie kos, pony rides, tractor trips, craft beer, tea garden, wine stalls and lots more.
