This nursery and restaurant is located where one of the first gardens in South Africa was kept. The Drostdy Kitchen Garden (1776) supplied the household of the Landlords (later the Resident Magistrate) and officials, as well as the staff and inmates of the old gaol, with a wide range of fruit, vegetables, herbs and staples.
The new owners (since December 2015) have big plans for Bella Donna Garden Restaurant and want to host talks by garden experts, extend the herb options and might include a local antique rose type soon. Bella Donna serves light lunches and dinner. These meals include hamburgers, wraps, salads, fish and calamari. They also have berry smoothies made from berries harvested right here in Swellendam.
Our boys and their two friends had a great time playing with provided toys, scooters and catching tadpoles in one of the water feature pools. This restaurant is in the shade and not close to an open street, which is great if you have children running around.
Bella Donna also serves fish and calamari. From Monday to Friday they are open in the evenings as well.
